  • Weeks 10-13 By: The X FACTOR (2024-04-09 22:43:14)
Week 10 - Don't hate the Players... hate the field!
Well, well well... looks like Week 10 was a rinse and repeat of Week 9 when all was said and done. Going into Sunday, no one would have bet on it, though. From what I saw on Sunday, Harman was playing to win and Schauffle and Clark were playing it too safe. And Scheffler did what he does... Scheffler holed out for eagle from the fourth fairway and had four birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn, sending him to an 8-under 64 and a one-shot victory that wasn’t decided until the final putt. Clark can be disappointed on the miss on 18, but he lost the tournament playing it safe on the drivable par 4 12th imho. Scheffler was already 19 or 20 under at that point and you need to step up and take easy holes when they're offered. Xander showed once again why he's the "best player to never win a major". So, a Scheffler team won... but thankfully NumberMunchers2 didn't take another payout! Congrats to Childahl7 on taking the first $300 of the year.
Diamond in the Rough: Scottie and good ol' Joel Dahmen brought it home for Connor.
Turds: Spieth, Zalatoris and Justin Thomas missed the cut.

Week 11 - Malnati wins 2nd Tourney 9 years later
3058 days. That's the time that elapsed since Peter Malnati last hoisted a PGA Tour trophy. Yet another low budget chump that I owned in the past that did nothing for me! We have had a lot of unlikely or first-time PGA Tour winners this season. Murray, Pavon, Dunlap, Taylor, Eckroat, Malnati, Knapp, Jaegar and Bhatia - INSANE! But I'd say Malnati - who's 36, was the least likely of all of them! And Malnati did it against league darling Cameron Young. I'm starting to have my doubts about Cameron Young... and I was lucky enough to own him his rookie season ;) He shared the lead with Peter Malnati (11-under) with two holes to play Sunday, facing an 18-foot birdie try at the par-3 17th hole. Long story short is he pulled a Xander and Malnati did not.
Congrats to one of my faves in ShooterMcGowan!
Diamond in the Rough: Peter Malnati
Honorable mention: Does anyone have Chandler Phillips? Carl Yuan has been making a lot of cuts this season. Speaking of Xander, he shot great on Sunday to bank.
Turds: Spieth. Burns. Finau. Im. My guys Min Woo Lee, Pendrith and Straka! Coody did us all a favor and withdrew!

Week 12 - Sheffler stunned by Moves like Jaeger
I had interest in the hothead from Argentina (Tosti), so I was watching this closely through the weekend. On Sunday, I expected Scheffler to make quick work of these wannabees - but he missed birdie putts of 11 and 5ft on the last 2 holes to finish 2nd. Scheffler also missed a 2ft putt on 18 on Friday...I mentioned Jaegar at the beginning of the year... yet another guy I owned in the past and got nothing from. But last year he made soo many cuts. And Tosti was golfing so well on Friday and Saturday given the conditions he tried a little too hard on 18 and ended up with a bogey. What a shame. Know what's also a shame? Numbermunchers won another $75 with his other team! Damn you Tyson Wigley!
Diamonds in the Rough: Stephan Jaeger has been doing it since last summer. Raise a glass to Tosti.
Turds: Jason Day and Luke List missed the cut. They were the only 2 in the top 50 FedEx that did. Besides newbie Knapp. COODY MADE A CUT!

    Week 13 - You're Welcome
A guy who's had 2 teams every year we've run this league is Jarrod Preisen. A good friend of mine and he's seen success over the years. But he didn't have his eye on Bhatia until I pointed him out! He'll tell you differently, but that chud can thank me for the weekly win.Jarrod, you owe me a beer! What a Sunday duel. McIllroy wasn't even sniffing the podium by the time McCarthy and Bhatia got on 18. I was fuming at Denny McCarthy. He was simply ridiculous. Talk about a guy in the zone. It gets no better than he was on the back nine. Hats off to the young Bhatia as well. Tough to keep it together when you have a guy with nothing to lose and no pressure having the back 9 of his life. Akshay looked like a goner when this went to a playoff. And oh the drama, as Akshay hurt his shoulder! Then... kerplunk... McCarthy puts himself in position to put it on the green from 100yds out completely duffs it... and just like that the magic was gone. He even missed the 12ft putt following...
Diamonds in the Rough: Bhatia and McCarthy - what a show. McIllroy FINALLY shows up and wins Jarrod the money (damn the golf gods who screwed Matsuyama when he shoulda had an eagle - his ball was halfway down on an approach shot)
Turds: Aberg was very sucky on Sunday. Van Rooyen, Cole, Murray, Horschel, English, An, Kim and Ryan Fox all missed the cut. Ryan Fox... what a turd. OWGR #28 to end the year and can't make a cut to save his life. Coody made a cut again... but ended fairly crappy and got beaten by his brother again.

  • Weeks 4-9 By: The Usual Suhspects (2024-03-14 03:53:55)
Ok... it's been 6 weeks since I last shared any commentary. Pretty pathetic, I'll admit. And the weather that affected several of the tournaments in the last 6 weeks, well... its been quite the opposite up here in the great white north. Warmest winter ever recorded in Minneapolis, actually (150 years documented). And no real snow storms to speak of other than Halloween (yes, Halloween!) and Valentine's Day. Golf is already open on some courses too (although I haven't golfed)! So let's recap what went on the last month and a half.

Week 4 - You Serious, Clark?!
Wyndham Clark was the definition of a bad buy coming into this season. He blew up last year and his 2023 season was 4 times better than any previous year on Tour. No surprise, only 1 team rostered him. Clark had been fading a bit through the winter but he recaptured the magic in Round 3 of the AT&T ProAm at Pebble Beach and shot a jaw-dropping 60! The most amazing fact was that an amateur had actually shot the course record, 61 - better than any pro had ever managed until Clark's 60. So, at the end of Saturday, Clark found himself in 1st. Heavy storms shut down Southern California on Sunday and again Monday and Clark walked away a winner! JJ Hardy wins the week.
Diamond in the Rough: Seriously? Wyndham Clark.
Turd - The Weather. What a shame - no play of the final round of a high-paying Signature event! Aberg didn't get his chance to seal the deal, either.

    Week 5 - Sorry, Charlie
This one was tough to watch in two ways. First, the tournament was marred by inclement weather from the beginning. So round 1, 2, 3 and 4 were continually running into one another. But as it often does, when the rain clears and the winds die down, the scores go low. Second, it's always fun to watch a guy who hasn't done it in a while, take 1st place for possibly one last time. Coming into Sunday, many expected the greatest golfer on earth to walk away with another one... I mean, Scheffler did win the WM Phoenix the previous 2 years. Charlie Hoffman appeared to have different plans with an eagle, birdie, birdie on holes 13-15. With Scheffler playing a couple holes behind him, Hoffman put the pressure on - and it appeared to finally break Scottie Ice. Hoffamn made sure to not screw up the rest of the round with 3 pars to close the round. Then, Nick Taylor birdied five of his last six holes in an incredible display of putting to shoot a bogey-free 6-under 65 and win a two-hole sudden-death playoff over Hoffman. NO ONE owns Nick Taylor! Crouch Potatoes wins with Hoffman and Burns going 2, 3.
Diamond in the Rough: Charlie Hoffman and Burns
Turds - Fowler and Poston missed the cut. And the drunk fans took it way too far by the sounds of it.

Week 6 - LIVLaughLoving it all the way to the Bank
Hideki was a good buy this year. And he proved it by earning most of his salary in one week! I missed this one, but Hideki shot 9 birdies on Sunday and no one was even close to that. Zalatoris also earned over half his salary in this tourney too. Chris Rocheford had them both on his team. Oh, he had Adam Hadwin too. He shot -6 on Sunday to finish 4th. Some guys have all the luck!
Diamonds in the Rough - Matsuyama, Zalatoris and Adam Hadwin
Turds - There's a lot of em. Tiger WD. Spieth DQed! JT, Kirk, Murray and Bradley all missed the cut. The final group... Cantlay and Xander. OMG did they suck - and I had Xander and Hideki on the same team - what could have been.

Week 7 - Jake "Dirt" Knapp wins on the Korn Ferry Tour
This tournament was worse then the 3M! The top ranked golfer was Thomas Detry at 27th on the Fed Ex rankings! There were hardly any big names to speak of... a real sleeper. Of course, Tony Finau was ready to put another notch in his belt - smh. Poor Tony only finished 13th though. Once more, nobody owned the eventual winner - Jake "Dirt" Knapp. The cheesy 'stache must hold some power like Sampson's hair, I guess. One team did have another rookie who finished 2nd. Sami Valimaki. Numbermunchers2 was crunching the numbers to fit Zalatoris on his squad with Scheffler... we'll get back to that in a little bit. Nice pick, Tyson!
Diamond - Sami! Jaeger, Pan and Lower all finished T3
Turd - Tony cuz he's always at the Amateur hour events. Detry and Hoffman missed the cut.
PIERCESON COODY W/D! He's the biggest turd of the year, no question.

    Week 8 - Eckroat/Dreiling Prove Cognizant
Austin Eckroat had slept on a 54-hole lead before. How would he sleep on a 61-hole lead? That was the question as Eckroat left the course on Sunday night clinging to a one-stroke lead with 11 holes to play as he readied for (another) weather-delayed Monday finish? Just fine, apparently. Eckroat entered the Bear Trap — the diabolical three-hole stretch of 15-17 — with a two-shot lead. He two-putted for par on 15 and rolled in a 12-footer for birdie on 16 to stretch his lead to three. Stress-free pars on 17 and 18 secured the win — and unlocked a handful of new tournaments he’s now exempt into, including the Masters. Erik's Van Ruining my season! I was so close to choosing him - he's been pretty great. His -8 on Sunday was good enough for T2. Min Woo Lee finally showed the promise we expected too. Congrats to The Dolts2 (I'd say Mr. Dreiling is proving quite the opposite) for the weekly win. He owned 5 players that finished Top 10! Lowry and Horschel were the other 2.
    Diamonds: Eckroat and Van Rooyen.
Turds - Eric Cole was bad. Berger and Im didn't make the weekend either. The final pairing (Lowry/Skinns) both sucked! I was high on Sepp Straka. I was wrong. Coody - shocker - missed the cut.

Week 9 - Scottie learned how to putt. Uh oh.
Already the best in golf from tee-to-green, Scheffler had a hot putter and no one stood a chance. He built a three-shot lead at the turn and poured it on to deliver a bogey-free round and the best Sunday score by two shots. It's going to be a long season for most of us if Scottie has indeed found the missing link. And here's NumberMunchers2 in the winner's circle for a 2nd time in 3 weeks! And his Sami Valimaki didn't even make the cut. The other 3 Scheffler owners will surely be bitter.
Diamonds in the Rough - Scheffler, but Zalatoris was the guy who won it. Lowry is banking too. Clark looking worthy with a 26 ft birdie on 18 to capture sole second.
Turds - Morikawa, Fleetwood and Svennson all shot 80 on Friday.

  • Weeks 2 & 3 By: The X FACTOR (2024-02-02 22:06:13)
Week 2 - This Game is for Amateurs
Let's make no bones about it - Homestead Grays 2 and Alex Seidlitz got screwed. But ... now they have the best young golfer on the planet at their disposal for the remainder of the season. So, not a total loss. As mentioned earlier, Bezuidenpoop owners prospered. Congrats, I guess, to Dave Pitrowski's EZ1Putt - with the Week 2 win. Who says no one remembers who finished second?!
Diamonds in the Rough - Nick Dunlap is good... real good. Bezuidenpoop is well on his way to covering his cost and will surely end up a decent buy... unless he goes to LIV! Kevin Yu kicked ass too.
Turds - Rickie Fowler and Tom Kim both missed the cut. Pendrith, Lowry and my guys Suh and Bhatia barely missed too!

    Week 3 - French Revolution
Start to finish, Matthieu Pavon lead the Farmers. In just his third start as a PGA TOUR member, Pavon is a PGA Tour winner! Not one of us picked him. How did we all overlook this guy? And he's starting out strong in Week 4 too. Another guy overlooked was Kevin Yu. There is a lot of talent coming into the league. I didn't even realize this tourney was ending on Saturday. It's probably for the best as I would've been stressing the whole time hoping for the win. I placed 2nd! Again! Over the years I have to be the leader in runner-up finishes, lol. The lucky turd who beat me by 39k was Curves Right. Greg Martin took Finau who was certainly a good buy, and that probably won him the $75 - now I really hope Tony two-steps to the LIV Tour!
Diamonds in the Rough - No secret, Nicolai Hojgaard was almost a must own. He needed one start to prove it. Aberg proving why he was a must own too. Finau got it done. Xander hanging around.
Turds - Morikawa and popular pick Cole missed the cut. I was really high on Sepp Straka's measurables. He sucked. Ryan Fox - Top 40 in the world and on my team - missed the cut. Thanks for nothing! Coody is trending toward bust (it's early).

  • Week 1 - An was Off By: The Usual Suhspects (2024-01-22 15:58:48)
Thankfully, looks like everything was fairly up-to-date, and other than a few rosters that I identified by Friday, things were mostly all good. Almost all the money is in too - so $9,385 is the final pot as originally calculated.

The funny thing is that I happened to reach out to this week's big winner when he had switched two players for another 2 - and you can guess one of those 2 players that was switched in... Sure enough, it was Grayson Murray! And I know what you're thinking - but NO - he made this change before the tourney even got going.

It's hard to sway away from all the hot up-and-comers at 1 million, and it takes courage to go with your gut - Congrats to Andy's SonofJohn1 for the Week 1 win. The only team to take a chance on Grayson Murray.

And what a way to win. Murray had no business making the playoff. Sand save after sand save, he refused to give up. And when it looked like all may be lost on 18, he stuck his approach shot 3ft away to make birdie (unlike Keegan Bradley) and the playoff.

And if that wasn't enough, on the first playoff hole he should've been dead off his tee shot. Sitting on in 3, he had to make a 40ft putt to make birdie as B. H. An looked ready to win sitting only 4ft away. Murray made it and An was off - end of playoff.

Diamonds in the Rough - Grayson Murray. Like Chris Kirk a year before, we have a feel-good story of a man battling alcoholism with a storybook ending. Bradley was a "Bad Buy"... or was he? Byeong Hun An was one of my guys... hard not to put him on the turd list as I watched him shoot great golf throughout the day, only the sh*t the bed when it really counted. Yuan banked too.

Turds - Sahith Theegala, Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick missed the cut. And say it isn't so, Pierceson Coody didn't make the weekend either (but he finished strong). Alex Smalltime went +2 in the final 3 holes to miss the cut by 1, including parring the easiest hole 18 - good to see he's keeping form with last year!
